EXPANDED FOOTNOTES fig. 1: The Night-blooming...

Poster Essay #1

EXPANDED FOOTNOTES fig. 1: The Night-blooming Cereus is a rare breed of flower that, in some species, only blooms once a year. This phenomenon was sensationalized in the live-action 1993 film “Dennis the Menace” wherein George Wilson, played by Walter Matthau, awaits the blooming of a similar plant that he has been growing and tending to for 40 years, only to miss the seconds-long occurrence due to the title character’s well-intentioned, though distracting, antics. fig. 2: The lyrics to “Sabotage” reference the Watergate scandal of the 1970s as an example of ultimate deception perpetuated from a position of power. The song acts as a stand-in for the Beastie Boys’ subsequent rage-induced rejection of said deception. fig. 3: What could be more terrifying than an entire sentence set in uppercase script? fig. 4: An introduction to fig. 5 and to the idea of questioning the boundaries of possibility. fig. 5: Wile E. Coyote uses simple (though often very clever) conventions to fool his adversary the Road Runner, though he never succeeds. Mr. Coyote’s weakness lies in the fact that he expects Mr. Runner to live by the same laws he assumes are immutable; however, Mr. Runner is aware of his context (a cartoon wasteland) and avoids demise by expanding the limits of reality. In this scene, Mr. Runner achieves the impossible by running through a 2-dimensional painted tunnel (an enigma in and of itself in an already 2-dimensional world). Mr. Coyote attempts the same and fails. A question of reality and our perception thereof arises. fig. 6: This quote is the reference point by which the preceding figures branch off.

suffervacation:
